Where Am I

Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 25, 2026

Where Am I (published on Google Play as "WhereAmI: Residency Days") is a personal, offline-first app for tracking how many days you spend in each country, for tax-residency recordkeeping. This policy explains what data the app handles — and, more importantly, what it does not do with it.

What the app collects

Location data (GPS and/or mobile network country), collected periodically at an interval you choose — every 1, 4, or 8 hours — and whenever you open the app, in order to determine which country you're present in on a given day.

Trip dates and countries you enter manually.

Data you choose to import from a Google Timeline export file.

Where your data goes

Nowhere. Where Am I has no account, no login, no cloud sync, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no advertising SDKs. All data is stored exclusively in a local database on your device. The app has no server to send your data to.

The only way data leaves your device is if you export it yourself, using the Export or Backup features in the app's Options screen — as a CSV, PDF, or JSON file — and only to the location you choose to save that file.

Why background location

Counting days accurately requires knowing where you are even on days you don't open the app — that's the entire purpose of the app. Background checks run on an interval you control, stay entirely on-device, and can be turned off at any time from the app's Options screen.

Data retention and deletion

Location logs and trips remain on your device until you delete them — individually, or by uninstalling the app, which removes the local database entirely. Where Am I does not back up your data automatically; automatic cloud backup is explicitly disabled.

Third-party services

Where Am I uses Android's Google Play Services Location APIs to determine device location on-device. This is a standard OS-level location API; it does not involve Where Am I sending your data to Google or anyone else.

Children's privacy

Where Am I is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
